rough notes

terms

Last updated 12 October 2026.

These are the rules for using Rough Notes. Rough Notes is a brand of Maze Stuff Private Limited ("Maze Stuff", "we", "us"), a company registered in India; these terms are an agreement between you and Maze Stuff. By creating an account you agree to them. You need to be at least 13, and if you're under 18, to have a parent's or guardian's permission.

Your book is yours

Everything you put in your book belongs to you. You give us permission to store, read and show it back to you only so the app can work (for example, reading a page so you can search it), and to have the services listed in our Privacy Policy do that for us. That permission ends when you delete the page or your account.

What we provide

  • Free: scan as many pages as you like. Each month, 10 notes are turned into text, and you can write 20 rough pages on your phone. Find searches printed words on every note. Your first 300 notes are backed up. Notes you've added stay yours whatever your plan.
  • Pro: every note turned into text, Find searches your handwriting too, unlimited rough pages, your whole book backed up and available anywhere you sign in, and AI apps you connect (such as Claude or ChatGPT) able to read your notes. Pro is tied to your Rough Notes account (the email you sign in with), not to one phone. Fair use applies: up to 300 notes read a day.

AI apps you connect (Pro). You can let an AI app read your notes. You choose to connect it, and you can disconnect it any time in Settings → Use in ChatGPT & Claude. It can only read your own notes, never change them. Once it has read something, that company's own terms apply to what it does with it; we're not responsible for its answers or for how it handles your notes. If Pro ends, it stops being able to read them.

Reading handwriting isn't perfect: it's done by AI models from other companies, so it can make mistakes. The text is our best reading of your photo; a crowded page may come back arranged by topic or redrawn as a diagram rather than exactly as laid out. The original photo is always kept, and you can fix any word.

Paying for Pro

Pro costs ₹149 a month or ₹1,299 a year in India (prices include GST); in other countries Pro has its own local price, which Google Play shows before you buy. It's billed by Google Play to the Google account on your phone and renews automatically at the end of each month or year until you cancel. You can cancel any time in Google Play (Payments & subscriptions); Pro stays on until the end of the time you've paid for. Refunds follow Google Play's rules, and any refund rights the law in your country gives you. If we ever change the price, Google Play tells you first and asks before charging the new price. If Pro ends, nothing is deleted: you go back to the Free limits, and every note you added stays in your book.

We sometimes give Pro for free, for example to early testers. It ends on the date we tell you, and nothing is charged.

Fair use

Don't use Rough Notes to store anything illegal, to break into anyone's account, or to overload the service. Only add what you have the right to keep; if a note holds other people's personal details, that's your responsibility. We may suspend accounts that break these rules. Free and Pro both have speed limits to keep the service fair for everyone.

Keeping your pages safe

We back up your book and work hard to keep it available, but no service is perfect. Download your notes now and then if they matter to you (Settings → Delete account → Download all my notes first).

Closing your account

You can delete your account any time in Settings. We may close accounts that break these terms, and we'll give you a chance to export first unless the law stops us.

Liability

Rough Notes is provided as is. To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect losses, and our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the last 12 months. None of this limits liability that the law doesn't let us limit, such as for death or injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Changes

If these terms change in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before they apply.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of India, and disputes go to the courts of Bengaluru. If you use Rough Notes as a consumer in a country whose laws give you rights that can't be taken away by agreement (for example in the EU or UK), you keep those rights, and you can also bring a claim in your own country's courts.
